The colon is the large intestine which is the last part of our digestive system that connects to the anus. Modern eating habits such as the consumption of large amounts of processed food and the reduced intake of high fibre foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, have a detrimental effect on the effectiveness of the colon. Higher levels of toxins and impacted waste food material in the colon arise as a consequence. Colon irrigation is a safe and effective intervention to address this. A Poorly Functioning Colon If your colon is not performing to it's optimum effectiveness it can lead to a wide array of symptoms and difficulties ranging from the obvious such as constipation, abdominal wind, bloating, and diarrhoea, to less obvious problems such as back pain, headache, fatigue, halitosis, body odour, irritability, confusion, and skin problems. As a result intestinal toxicity is very much a part of modern day life. What are the Benefits of Colonic Irrigation ?A colonic will cleanse the large intestine of any toxic materials and therefore remove the attendant harmful effects. Debris and impacted material that has built up over time is gently removed in the process of a series of irrigations. This restores proper function to the colon. During the course of the treatments the gentle filling and emptying of the colon encourages natural muscular contraction (peristaltic) activity. The treatments also restores the proper shape of the colon which can become misshapen over time. Each of the body's systems and organs are connected to the colon by reflex points. Colonic irrigation stimulates these points thereby affecting the related body parts in a positive way. What Happens During a Colonic Irrigation Treatment ?Sessions usually last about 45 minutes but may be shorter or longer. Colonic irrigation involves the safe, gentle infusion of water into the colon via the rectum. There are no chemicals or drugs used and the entire therapy is both relaxing and effective. During the session clients lie comfortably on a treatment table. From the colon hydrotherapy instrument a small disposable speculum is gently inserted into the rectum through which slightly warm filtered water is passed into the colon. Modern hydrotherapy equipment uses multi-stage water purification systems and individual disposables that eliminate any possible contamination to the client from a previous treatment. Closed systems are used which permit waste to be conveyed into the drain line without any offensive odour and without impinging upon the dignity of the client. Colonic irrigation is rarely painful and only when the client is very tense and resistant. An accomplished colon therapist is adept at putting clients at their ease thereby minimising discomfort. Most clients find that the colonic is a relaxing experience and most thoroughly enjoy the sensation of feeling lighter, clean and clear afterwards. The condition of the colon and the client's past life style will determine the number of treatments required. In most cases more than one colonic irrigation is required to remove all of the impacted waste material. Holistic
