What is Counselling?

We all feel a bit lost at sea sometimes. It can be difficult to navigate the waters or to manage life's ups and downs. But you needn't feel alone. Whether you're considering seeking counselling in Dublin, looking for information or concerned about a friend or family member, help is at hand.

Counselling is a warm, supportive relationship where people bring troubles or questions knowing they will be treated with support and respect. Some people seek out counselling because they have identified areas in their lives they are not happy with, and wish to make some changes. Others just feel unhappy, and want to talk things through.

Sometimes counselling involves sharing with a client what we know from research and psychological science, in order to help them move forward. More often, it involves helping people to work out their own solutions to problems, or to figure out their own views on events or experiences.

Mostly, counselling involves listening, sharing and support.

Although some people might feel daunted initially about sharing problems, counselling is not scary. In fact most people find it a relief to share a problem, to realise they are not alone and to find a real solution to something that may have been bothering them for some time.

Benefits of Counselling

Counselling can help you to find real solutions to problems. It can help you figure out where you want to be in life. Counselling can help you work through distressing emotions such as grief, guilt or anger, and help you put an end to repetitive cycles of worry, depression, anxiety, or panic. Counselling gives you the space and the opportunity to reflect on your past life experiences with a view to making a richer, more fulfilling present and future. The benefits of counselling are numerous and many people find it to be a life-changing experience.

Adolescent Therapy can help you learn new things about yourself. You can learn new things about yourself. If you have a problem or worry, you can share it and get some help to work things out. But counselling is not all about problems: You can find out more about your strengths and weaknesses, and where these fit in. Counselling can even be fun. Why not give it a go?

What is Psychological Assessment?

If you feel that something may be wrong, but aren't too sure what it is, you have the option of requesting a psychological assessment. Psychological assessments are tests that help us figure out if any difficulties exist, and the extent to which someone is experiencing the difficulties. They can help to guide people towards the place in life they wish to be. Psychological assessments generally fall into the following categories:

Rewind counselling bullet point Personality Assessments, investigating people's strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, patterns of behaviour, coping skills and interpersonal relationships.
Rewind counselling bullet point Emotional/Behavioural Assessments, exploring areas of emotional difficulty, attention or challenging behaviour.
Rewind counselling bullet point Cognitive Assessments, involving intellectual (IQ) testing, assessing for levels of ability or difficulty with development, language, comprehension or problem-solving skills, or investigating the possibility of learning disability.
Rewind counselling bullet point Occupational Guidance Assessments, which help identify careers or occupations that best match an individual's strengths and assets.

Psychological assessment usually involves finding out where an individual's scores lie in comparison to the general population, in order to assess the level of strength or of difficulty. When a client is attending for regular therapy sessions, psychological assessment can help to inform the style and duration of treatment, measure progress or source additional supports.
