Osteopathy is a safe and very effective form of treatment that is for all ages, which can help with a wide varIET®y of conditions such as postural problems, aches, pains, arthritis, work and sport-related injuries. ![]() Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment, which works with the structure and function of the body. For osteopaths, it is extremely important for the body to be physically balanced in order to function optimally. Problems with the musculoskeletal framework of the body can affect the circulatory, lymphatic and neuronal pathways to any part of the body and therefore can possibly affect any aspect of health. Osteopaths find health within the individual, they look to resolve dysfunctions within the structure, bringing the body back to a balanced state. Dublin 2 Osteopath BackgroundI became really interested in the human body, health and well-being and decided to undertake a new career path and became an osteopath. I graduated from the European School of Osteopathy with a BSc (Hons) in Osteopathy. This entailed a four-year degree, where I gained experience in structural, cranial, functional and visceral osteopathy. I am fully insured and registered with the Osteopathic Council of Ireland, General Osteopathic Council (GosC) and also a member of the British Osteopathic Association. These are our regulatory bodies and ensure that the best practice and standards are maintained. I believe everyone is entitled to lead a happy healthy life, however along the way and depending on what we do in our lives, we can pick up injuries, stiffness and pain. I therefore work with people of all ages, from babies to the elderly. My passion is for people to optimise their health and function as best they can. I do this through osteopathic treatment, education and advice on lifestyle, postural issues, ergonomics and work-related problems. Cranial OsteopathyInside the skull, there is a covering over the brain, spinal cord and sacrum called the dura. The dura acts to protect the central nervous system. The central nervous system controls the functioning of every organ, nerve and muscle in the body. Cranial osteopathy is a systematic approach to patient diagnosis and treatment utilising the bodys own inherent wave impulse emanating from the central nervous system and the cerebrospinal fluid. Cranial osteopathy is very gentle, yet an extremely effective approach to osteopathy and can be used in a wide varIET®y of conditions for people of all ages from birth right up to old age. What Happens During an Osteopathic Treatment?Soft tissue: This technique is applied to the musculature surrounding the spine, where it consists of rhythmic stretching, deep pressure and traction. The purpose is to move inflammation, relax hypertonic muscles and break down fibrous muscle related to injury. Patients can experience pain while this technique is being carried out, this is because the area is lacking blood supply and also a toxin build-up in the area. The pain usually subsides within 24-48 hours post treatment. Articulation: This is where the problem joints(s) and surrounding ligaments and musculature are moved and stretched. It works very well for very stiff problematic areas in the body. It rarely causes pain. Manipulation of joints: A high velocity/low amplitude thrust is used to restore specific joint function, where the joint then regains its normal range of motion. This technique also acts to reset neural reflexes. This procedure also reduces joint dysfunction, asymmetry and restriction of motion and tenderness. Muscle Energy Technique: In this manual technique, the patient is directed to use his or her muscles from a precise position into a specific direction against a counter force applied by the osteopath. The purpose is to restore motion, decrease muscle tension and correct joint dysfunction. Osteopathic Treatment ReactionsIt is not uncommon to experience a treatment reaction. This is perfectly normal. The reaction can typically be felt as pain or discomfort, tiredness and even a heightened awareness of emotions. For the first 24 to 36 hours, this is where the patient will experience the symptoms mentioned above. Then, gradually over the next 36 hours the symptoms subside. Generally, nothing needs to be done for treatment reactions however plenty of rest is recommended. If anything further needs to be done Karen will advise you. Osteopath Consultation Fees
